A HIGH-EXCITATION OPTICALLY OBSCURED H-II REGION IN THE NUCLEUS OF NGC-5253

摘要
Spectrophotometry from 8-13 µm of the strong infrared source in the nucleus of the galaxy NGC 5253 has revealed intense emission in the [S IV] fine structure line, and a dust continuum suffering silicate absorption. These observations require either a compact cluster of several hundred early 0 stars or a single massive highly luminous object, within 50 pc of the nucleus and obscured in the visible, to provide both the infrared luminosity and the ionizing flux. Simple models are discussed. © Royal Astronomical Society.
