Rate constants have been obtained from near-thermal to about 1 eV mean relative kinetic energy for the reactions of Ar2+(3P) with CH4, C2H2 and NO2 and of Ar+ with CH4 and from 0.5 to 3 eV for the reactions of Ar2+(1S) with N2, O2, CO2, C2H2 and CH4. All these rate constants do not change with kinetic energy in the ranges investigated and agree well with the values of the Langevin (non-polar) or average dipole orientation (polar) predictions. The rate constants for the reaction of Ar+ with NO2 and for Ar2+(1S) with H2, investigated in the range from about 0.1 to 0.5 eV are somewhat smaller than the theoretical values. The results are discussed in the light of SIFT data, which are shown in an accompanying paper. © 1979.
