TRANSMISSION ELECTRON-MICROSCOPE INVESTIGATION AND MAGNETIC-PROPERTIES OF HIPED BI-PB-SR-CA-CU-O

Hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) has been used to prepare Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr1.6Ca2.0Cu3.0O(y) samples. The HIPed samples were investigated through AC susceptibility measurement, magnetic field dependence of the critical current density, and electron microscopy. It was found that the HIPed samples contained dense dislocations and planar defects which may act as effective pinning centres, responsible for the improvement of J(c)-H characteristics of the HIPed samples. HIPing resulted in a new modulated structure that appeared to be commensurate with a periodicity of 2b rather than 7-9b as observed in the normally sintered samples. A new phase of (BiPb)3Sr3Ca2CuO(y) was observed that had a simple hexagonal structure with a = 0.997 nm and c = 0.347 nm.
