SURVEY OF FORMALDEHYDE IN THE ORION DUST CLOUD L1641

The distribution of formaldehyde in the Lynds cloud L1641, which lies to the south of the Orion nebula, has been mapped by observations of the 111-110 absorption line transition at a wavelength of 6 cm. Two large condensations are identified which are probably collapsing, but their molecular masses (~ 1.5 x 104A/☉) may be sufficient to maintain the system in dynamic equilibrium. The formaldehyde distribution is different from that observed for CO or OH but the formaldehyde correlates more closely with extinction and therefore appears to be a better tracer of dust in this region than the other two molecular species. © Royal Astronomical Society.
