EFFECT OF AUTOGENOUS WELDING ON CHLORIDE PITTING CORROSION IN AUSTENITIC STAINLESS-STEELS

Potentiostatic and isothermal immersion tests were used to investigate pitting corrosion in the weld metal of low carbon austenitic stainless steels. It is shown that autogeneous welding has a detrimental effect on resistance to pitting corrosion in acid chloride environments under oxidizing conditions. This loss of corrosion resistance is correlated directly with alloy depletion or coring effects in the austenitic dendrite structure of the weld metal and is not strongly influenced by the presence of interdendritic ferrite.
