VIRAL SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SOME IN VITRO CULTURED TISSUES FROM BABOONS (PAPIO SP)

Fibroblast-like diploid cell lines from fetal baboon heart (FBH), lung (FBL), and spleen (FBSp) were initiated and established in continuous culture. They were compared with each other and primary baboon lung (BLC) and kidney (BKC) cell cultures in regard to their susceptibility to over 100 simian and human viruses. The three cell lines were generally less sensitive to the tested viruses than BLC and BKC cultures. The FBH cell line supported the growth of Coxsackie viruses A2, A4, A12, A21, and A24 in addition to the ones which are cytopathogenic for BKC (A7, A9, A10, A14, and A16). This cell line was also extremely sensitive to the tested simian enteroviruses. BLC cultures supported the growth of 17 viruses of the Coxsackie A group. The 4 tested poliovirus strains propagated best in BKC cultures. They were cytopathogenic for FBH and FBL cell lines but not for the FBSp cell lines. BLC cultures compared favorably with BKC and WI38 cell cultures for isolating viruses from oral swabs. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
