Decontamination of feed can be obtained by pelleting under addition of steam if proper temperature and moisture conditions are maintained. Decontamination of feed was successfully achieved by addition of 0.9 % formic acid as well. I he supply of feed decontaminated via either of the methods led to a reduced contamination of animals at slaughter and also improved weight gain and feed conversion. Because of the positive effect on performance of the anima!s exerted by the pelleting, this method seems particularly attractive if the equipment is available. The other method opens up good perspectives, where this is not the case. Additional precautions to prevent contamination from other sources than feed are essential to obtain an optimum effect on the animal. © 1979, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.
