DETERMINATION OF INTERSTITIALLY SOLVED CARBON IN HOT-DIP GALVANIZED STEEL SHEETS WITH A TORSION PENDULUM

For determination of interstitially solved carbon in strip-shaped steel sheets a Collette-type torsion pendulum was built up. Basic and measuring principles and construction details are described. By means of calibration samples and statistical considerations a detection limit of 1.7 . 10(-4) mass percentage was determined. For commercial hot-dip galvanized steel sheets the influence of furnace-exit temperature and total carbon content on the interstitially solved carbon content was investigated. With increasing furnace-exit temperature the amount of interstitially solved carbon increases whereas with increasing total carbon content the amount of interstitially solved carbon decreases.
