A vacuum-cup device attached to a standard balloon-tipped catheter has been used successfully to extract large pulmonary emboli in dogs by a transvenous technique. Removal of pulmonary emboli in critically ill patients should be possible without the added burden of general anesthesia and thoracotomy. © 1969.
