INFRARED-LASER INDUCED BROMINATION AND CHLORINATION OF CHLORODIFLUOROMETHANE

Single-pulse irradiation of CHC1F2-Br2gas mixtures at 1088 cm-1and doses of 0.25-0.6 J/cm2produced up to 64% reaction. With excess Br2, the product was mainly CBrClF2, with CBr2F2and (CBrF22as byproducts. Use of CDC1F2in place of CHC1F2reduced the relative yield of CBrClF2. Kinetic absorption spectroscopy showed that reaction products appear after an induction period of ~ 1 µs and that the disappearance of Br2becomes detectable after -10µs. The dominant process leading to CBrClF2is inferred to be the chain reaction Br + HCC1F2→ HBr + CC1F2, CC1F2+ Br2→ CBrClF2+ Br. Similar single-pulse irradiation of CHC1F2-C12gas mixtures at 1088 cm-1produces CC12F2+ HC1 in ~98% yield; CC1F3and CC13F are minor products. © 1979, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
