INFLUENCE OF SURFACE CONDITION AND ENVIRONMENT ON THE HYDRIDING OF TITANIUM

摘要
This paper discusses the conditions under which cathodically impressed or galvanically induced currents can cause hydriding of titanium. The oxide film that normally covers the surface of titanium is shown to be an effective barrier to hydrogen penetration. In environments where this film is unstable or where the oxide film has been damaged by abrasion, hydrogen absorption can occur. Experimental evidence and service case histories are cited.
