The Heat of Mixing Electrolytes: The Cross-Square Rule in the Solvent N-Methylacetamide

The six possible heats of mixing of the system Na(+),Pr(4)N(+)-Br(-),I(-) have been measured at 35 degrees C in the solvent N-methylacetamide at an ionic strength of 0.5. The cross-square rule of T. F. Young((1,2)) does not hold accurately, and there are strong attractive forces between a cation and an anion. The largest effect in the heats of mixing is the formation of tetra-n-propylammonium iodide interactions. The data is compared to that of the Na(+),K(+)-Cl(-),NO(3)(-) system in water.
