TESTING OF HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS FOR CRYOGENIC CURRENT LEAD APPLICATIONS

The feasibility of using ceramic high temperature superconductors in cryogenic current leads to reduce helium boil-off has been demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Advancing this technology to practical applications requires the ability to fabricate low-cost, device size high temperature superconductor components which can meet certain performance specifications. These specifications may include requirements for critical current density, superconductor/normal metal joint resistance, thermal cycling and others. A series of tests aimed at obtaining this performance information has been conducted at Westinghouse Science & Technology Center on superconductor samples obtained from several sources. The results indicated that the current ceramic superconductor fabrication technology has advanced enough to produce practical superconductor components for cryogenic current lead applications. Details of the conductor testing and analysis of the test results are presented.
