The Mössbauer effect was used to study the oxidation states of europium and ytterbium silicides and germanides and to determine characteristics of the chemical bond in rare earth silicides and germanides. Results show that Eu is in the divalent state in the EuSi2 and EuGe2 compounds, while Yb is divalent in YbSi2, mostly divalent in YbGe1·75 and trivalent in Yb5Si3. Isomer shifts obtained in the case of Dy5Si3 and Dy5Ge3 were larger than those obtained for DySi2 and DyGe2 indicating shorter Dy-Dy bond in the Dy5X3 compounds, in good agreement with crystallographic data. © 1969.
