A hairless mutant guinea pig (crl:IAF/HA[hr/hr]BR) has recently been developed that could be useful for the study and evaluation of primary irritants and contact sensitizers. The quality of responses in this new strain was therefore compared to the standard Hartley strain animal. Two standard procedures commonly utilized for risk assessment were selected. Dose-response experiments were designed to evaluate a full range of dermal responses. It was determined that the hairless guinea pig is more susceptible to both a primary irritant and a contact sensitizer as determined by use of the guinea pig immersion and Buehler methodologies.
