MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY-INVENTORY PROFILE PATTERNS OF SUICIDE ATTEMPTERS

Used multivariate procedures to determine whether 75 suicidal and 201 nonsuicidal psychiatric patients could be differentiated and to identify subtypes of suicidal patients. Discriminant analysis did not produce a set of differentiating variables (i.e., MMPI scales) that correctly classified suicidal and nonsuicidal Ss at useful levels. The cluster analysis revealed much variation in MMPI profiles among both suicidal and nonsuicidal Ss. Among Ss whose MMPI profiles had the Pt and Sc scales as the 2 most elevated scales, the relative elevation of the D and Hs scales was significantly associated with whether or not the patient had attempted suicide.
