Both 4-14C- and 26-14C-cholesterol were incorporated into ecdysterone by Podocarpus elata. This demonstrates that no degradation of the side chain is involved in the biosynthetic pathway. However, three possible intermediates in ecdysterone biosynthesis, 25-hydroxycholesterol-26-14C, cholesterol 5α,6α-epoxide-4-14C, and cholesterol 5β,6β-epoxide-4-14C were not converted to ecdysterone. The significance of these results in the biosynthesis of ecdysterone is discussed. © 1970.
