Human intercostal muscles in vitro at 37° C have a resting potential of 79.8 mV; their action potential has an overshoot of 22.4 mV and a maximal rate of rise of 570 V/s. The time taken from 20% of the amplitude to the peak is 0.26 ms; the time from the peak to 20 °/o of the amplitude is 1.18 ms. The height and duration of the negative after-potential show great variability. The membrane acts like a potassium electrode for extracellular potassium concentrations above 10 mM. © 1969 S.
