X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate the chemical stability of cleaved single-crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 surfaces interacting with overlayers of various transition and noble metals (Ti, Pd, Fe, Cu, Au). Except for gold which is inert, all the other metals are strongly reactive at submonolayer coverages. In general, a thin metal oxide layer (almost-equal-to 2 angstrom thick) forms immediately after deposition through the removal of oxygen atoms from the top Bi - O plane. Chemical shifts and lineshape modifications of core and valence levels result from the disruption of the outermost layers of the superconductor. The structures are subsequently buried as the metal film becomes thicker and surface segregation of metallic bismuth to the surface occurs. The growth mode of the interface is of the Volmer-Weber type with formation of clusters of increasing thickness and size.
