SURFACE SEGREGATION OF BORON IN NITROGEN-STRENGTHENED STAINLESS-STEEL

This paper presents the results of a study of surface segregation on polycrystalline 21Cr-6Ni-9Mn (21-6-9), a nitrogen strengthened, austenitic stainless steel. The characteristic segregation of both impurities and major alloy constituents has been measured using scanning Auger spectroscopy (SAM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and sputter Auger techniques. The results show that the surface composition can be strongly heterogeneous and indicate the necessity for high spatial resolution in analyzing surface segregation, particularly in complex polycrystalline alloys.
