RADIOTHERAPY FOR EARLY STAGES OF VOCAL CORD CANCER

The treatment of choice of early carcinoma of the vocal cords is radiotherapy, with surgery reserved for any radiation failures. The cure rate of Stage I lesions is 92 percent by radiotherapy alone, 76 percent for Stage II lesions, and approaches 100 percent when sugery is used for radiation failures. No patient required a tracheostomy or laryngectomy for radionecrosis. Radiation failures of Stage I and II lesions were equally curable by subsequent surgery. © 1969, SAGE Publications.
