The principles of aeroelastic and aerodynamic models are distinguished, and aeroelastic magnification is identified as a possible source of unacceptable error in the latter type of model. Past justifications of aerodynamic modeling have not clearly identified the relevant error-controlling parameters, or have not established quantitative limits required for valid results on the parameters studied. Results of new tests show that the reduced velocity, in conjunction with the mass-damping parameter, provide a good characterization of the aeroelastic magnification factor for an 8:1:1 square cylinder in a simulated suburban environment.
