NCRP-Report 49 deals with the effect of239PuO2-particles in the lung. A basic aspect in the considerations is the frequency of cells traversed by one or by more α-particles. The present article contains the explicit derivation of the formulae underlying the data in the NCRP-report. © 1978 Springer-Verlag.
