PULSE VOLTAMMETRIC DETERMINATION OF BUTYLATED HYDROXY TOLUENE IN TRANSFORMER OILS

2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) known to retard chemical and electrochemical degradation has been separated from new and used transformer oils by adsorption chromatography. Analysis of an acetonitrile eluate was carried out by differential pulse voltammetry on a platinum microelectrode. Interferences from decomposition products were further eliminated by adjusting the pH of the acetonitrile test media with tertiary butyl ammonium hydroxide. A detection limit of 10 ppm, and a reproducibility better than 5% are claimed for this rapid analytical technique (3 analyses/h). © 1979, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
