LANGMUIR-BLODGETT-FILMS OF BIS(STEARYL PYRIDINE-4-CARBOXYLATE)(PHTHALOCYANINATO)IRON(II)

A Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film is made from an axially-substituted bis(stearyl pyridine-4-carboxylate)(phthalocyaninato)iron(II) ((SP4C)(2)Fe(II)Pc). The two hydrocarbon long chain ligands provide the species with monolayer-forming ability and successfully prevent intermolecular interaction between the phthalocyanine molecules in the film, though having a negative effect on the molecular orderliness. This is the first example of a phthalocyanine LB film in which the phthalocyanine molecules are not aggregated. While the LB film of(SP4C)(2)Fe(II)Pc is silent in voltammetric studies, an adsorbed film of the same species on graphite exhibits two reversible redox couples within the water limits, attributed to the [(SP4C)(2)(FePC)-P-III(2-)](+)/(SP4C)(2)FE(II)Pc(2-) and (SP4C)(2)FE(II)Pc(2-)/[(SP4C)(2)FE(I)Pc(2-)](-) processes, respectively. The (SP4C)(2)FE(II)Pc LB film can be oxidized by chlorine gas but is relatively stable to the attack of H2O2 and OCl-.
