OXYGEN DEFICIENCY IN THE SUPERCONDUCTING OXIDES (LA1-XMX)2CUO4 (M = SR, BA)

Oxygen deficiency in the (La1-xMx)2CuOy (M = Sr, Ba) system was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. The oxygen-defect concentration becomes minimal after annealing in 1 atm of O2, i.e. y is very close to 4.0 over the range of composition x < 0.15 for both the Sr- and Ba-doped systems. In PO2 = 10(-3) atm, significant oxygen defects are incorporated and the maximum defect-concentration is nearly the same in the two systems. Oxygen defects have usually had a very large negative effect on superconductivity. In two Ba-doped samples with x = 0.0625 and x = 0.065, however, T(c) increases with increasing defect-concentration. These two compounds transform to a low-temperature tetragonal phase near 60 K which has been suggested to suppress superconductivity. However, this transformation temperature becomes higher with increasing oxygen defects, hence with increasing T(c) casting doubt on the previous suggestion.
