This study was divided into two parts: (1) the 7-day intraperitoneal LD50 of 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethanol (Kelthane) was determined, and subsequently groups of rats were injected intraperitoneally with 1 5 the LD50 dissolved in corn oil. Groups were sacrified at 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 40, 48, and 96 hours after administration. Samples of the blood, brain, fat, feces, heart, kidney, liver, lung, muscle, testes, and urine were obtained and analyzed for Kelthane and metabolites. (2) The 7-day oral LD50 of Kelthane was determined, and subsequently groups of rats were fed 1 20 this amount dissolved in pure corn oil, for 40 days. Blood samples were obtained on days 14 and 29 and liver biopsies were performed on days 15 and 30. The rats were sacrificed on day 40, and the tissues were separated and analyzed as before. The distribution in the various organs and tissues is discussed in the light of present knowledge. The metabolites found were 4,4′-dichlorobenzophenone (DCB), 4,4′-dichlorobenzhydrol, and 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroethylene (DDE). © 1969.
