摘要
Physiological analyses of luminous bacteria indicate that the different symbiotic species can be separated into two distinct physiological types. This division is based upon differences in (1) the responses of the bacteria to various oxygen tensions, and (2) the production of pyruvate by the bacteria. It is proposed, on the basis of these distinctions, that symbiosis must operate in fundamentally different ways in the two host-symbiont systems. Two models of symbiosis consistent with the known facts are presented and discussed. © 1979.
