A 3 MeV Van de Graaff accelerator together with a fast neutron time-of-flight spectrometer was used to study the inelastic scattering of neutrons from 197Au for incident energies up to 1500 keV. The inelastic neutron scattering cross sections were determined at 90° from about 100 keV above the respective thresholds for the known levels in gold as well as for a number of previously unknown levels. An attempt was made to determine the energies of the excited states and assign spins and parities to the different levels. It appears that neutron excitation provides information on nuclear structure not readily attainable by other means. © 1968.
