TEXTURE PREFERENCE AND ACUITY IN DOMESTIC CHICK

Presented 272 1- and 281 7-day old chicks with a choice between pairs of textured patterns, varying in element size, that were placed directly under the glass floor of a visual cliff. Ss descended to the finer texture when a pattern composed of 1/8 in elements were compared to patterns composed of larger elements. When preference behavior was assessed for patterns with elements greater than 1/8 in. vs. patterns less than 1/8 in., the coarser texture was preferred. Finally, Ss preferred a textured pattern, regardless of the size of the elements, to an untextured pattern. In all conditions, preferences were more marked in the 7- than the 1-day old Ss.
