A THEORETICAL VISCOSITY CORRECTION FACTOR FOR HEAT-TRANSFER AND FRICTION IN PIPE-FLOW

By coupling a consideration of heat transfer into a region of constant shear stress with a temperature-dependent viscosity, it has been shown that viscosity correction ratios of the form introduced by Sieder and Tate [namely (μb/μwn] have a theoretical justification. The index n depends upon whether μb is greater or less than μw. For heating conditions (μw < μb) n is about 0.1, whilst for cooling conditions (μw > μb) n is about 0.27. These results and the corresponding result for the effect of variable viscosity on friction factor are in agreement with experimental findings. © 1990.
