TESTS WITH 7 ESTABLISHED AND CANDIDATE ACARICIDES AGAINST THE COMMON SCAB MITE OF CATTLE, PSOROPTES-OVIS (ACARI, PSOROPTIDAE)

Dipping, spraying and spray-dipping trials were carried out during 1972-1973 and 1974-1975 against P. ovis, the common scab mite of sheep and cattle, in 36 trials with 96 cattle. The test chemicals were SD 14114, crufomate (Ruelene), cyhexatin (Plictran), coumaphos (Co-Ral), malathion, toxaphene and phosmet (Prolate, GX-118). SD 14114, crufomate and malathion were ineffective at all concentrations and by all methods tried. Cyhexatin was ineffective by spray-dip but effective by vat dipping. Coumaphos at 0.25% AI [active ingredient] (in both single and double applications) was ineffective by vat dipping, and 2 dippings with phosmet at 0.20% AI were required to control mites. Toxaphene was effective applied once by either method.
