HIGH COORDINATION-NUMBER CALAMITIC METALLOMESOGENS

Metal-containing liquid crystals are a rapidly expanding field. Approaches to the design and synthesis of high coordination number complexes with liquid crystal properties, such as the mesomorphic ferrocenes in the Figure, are described. Lessons to be learnt from laterally substituted mesogens, for example orthometallated imines, are discussed.
