The ERG [electroretinogram] of 3 spp. of isopodan crustaceans, Armadillo officinalis, Porcellio loewis and Ligia italica, were studied under different experimental conditions and using ether, picrotoxin and parathion. A decomposition of the mass ERG into 3 components, namely a negative rapid wave (NR), elicited from the photoreceptors, a negative slow one (NS) and a positive one (P) is proposed. The flicker fusion frequencies [FFF] were 24 Hz in A. officinalis, 32 Hz P. loewis and 78 Hz in L. italica. The FFF seems to be an increasing function of the number of ommatidia. The frequency transfer functions were determined: they have the same shape in the 3 spp., but are more or less shifted along the frequency axis. Those functions make it possible to explain the phenomenon of alternating potentials, easily observed in isopods.
