STRUCTURE OF FLAKE GRAPHITE IN NI-C EUTECTIC ALLOY

Specimens of directionally frozen Ni-C eutectic alloy have been examined by optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that crystallographic stacking faults occur between fault free layers ~10-5 cm thick. The faults involve rotations about the c-axis of graphite of ~13°, ~22° and ~28°. Individual fault free layers contain twins which correspond to 20°45′ rotations about the 〈11̄00〉 axes. It is shown how the combination of these crystallographic defects can be related to the morphology of of graphite flakes and possibly to that of graphite spherulites. © 1969.
