We propose a combinatorial optimization procedure for part design which transforms the typically decoupled and serial processes of conception, geometry and mesh generation, analysis, and optimization into a unified concurrent framework founded upon a single data structure. The method proceeds by: construction of a cost functional comprising materials, manufacturing, and performance objectives and constraints; representation of R(d) by a lattice of N(d) binary indicator 'particles' and associated 'elements'; description of the geometric attributes (volume, surface area, smoothness and connectedness) and physical behavior (structural, thermal and fluid) of candidate parts by particle-based pseudo-Boolean functions and element-based partial-differential-equation solutions, respectively; approximate global minimization of the non-convex cost functional with respect to non-topology-preserving geometric variations by the method of simulated annealing; convergence as N --> infinity. Several simple structural and heat transfer examples are described.
