INSITU MEASUREMENT OF PARTICLE AGGREGATION AND BREAKAGE KINETICS IN A CONCENTRATED SUSPENSION

The results of an experimental investigation of the formation of silica flocs and their subsequent breakage in a stirred tank, as a function of agitation rate, solids concentration and polymer flocculant dosage are presented. The evolution and disintegration of aggregates (in the size range 1-500 mum) in concentrated aqueous particulate slurries (up to 5% solids by volume) has been measured directly in situ using a scanning laser microscope. The results obtained demonstrate the utility of in situ measurements as a powerful tool to aid in the design and control of flocculation processes, and to understand the underlying mechanisms. For the case of a stirred and baffled tank flocculator, various protocols of flocculant addition (single, pulsed and continuous addition) can be tested and the mechanical cohesivity of the resulting flocs can be estimated from the rate of floc disintegration which can be derived from the particle size measurements.,
