MICROSTRUCTURE OF THICK 180-DEGREES DOMAIN-WALLS

Surface colloid patterns of wavy domain walls were observed on a (001) garnet sample with positive cubic anisotropy and an additional uniaxial stress anisotropy. Magnetooptic investigation of the same sample area revealed the inner magnetic microstructure to be that of a broad 180 degree domain wall. The directly observed micromagnetic geometry confirms an earlier model and is believed to be the case also in other wavy-like domain patterns discovered on iron plates and amorphous ribbons as long as the anisotropy conditions are comparable with the presented ones. After a magnetic treatment of the sample, rows of ring-like surface colloid patterns were observed occasionally.
