The karyotype of Apis mellifera is illustrated and described, using mitotic chromosomes. The chromosome complement in the haploid male (n 16) could be divided into the two groups: 8 metacentrics and 8 submetacentrics. The longest metaphase chromosome was about 4·3μm long, and the shortest 1·3 μ.m, after in vitro pretreatment with colchicine. The secondary constriction was clearly seen in the longest chromosome. © 1978 International Bee Research Association.
