SPIN-DENSITY-WAVE DOMAIN IN CU1-XMNX - DIAGNOSTICS FOR THE SPIN SUSCEPTIBILITY OF AN ELECTRON-GAS

Neutron diffraction experiments in Cu(1-x)Mn(x) alloys indicate the presence of spin-density-wave domains with wave vector magnitude congruent-to 2k(F) (k(F) = Fermi wave vector of Cu) and coherence length congruent-to 11 FCC unit cells. These results cannot be explained by the usual RKKY interaction between solute moments. We study a model form of the conduction electron spin susceptibility which predicts (i) formation of SDW domains, (ii) concentration scaling laws for local field distribution and specific heat, and (iii) power law increase of the nonlinear susceptibility above T(c).
