EFFECT OF VENOUS OCCLUSION ON ANTITHROMBIN-III, PLASMINOGEN ACTIVATOR AND FIBRINOGEN DEGRADATION PRODUCT (FRAGMENT-E) LEVELS

Venous occlusion causes local haemoconcentration and corrections were made before interpretation of the results. An increase in antithrombin III level was demonstrated in some subjects together with a qualitative change due to the formation of antithrombin III-activated procoagulant complexes. Serial measurements during 20 minutes venous occlusion showed a delayed increase in plasminogen activator activity for 6-7 min, which continued to rise even after 20 min. The fibrinogen degradation product - fragment E-response was biphasic and the timed measurement of this response may be a useful adjunct in assessing the in vivo fibrinolytic potential of the individual. © 1979.
