MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF WORKER-ORIENTED AND JOB-ORIENTED VERBS

Attempted to determine if a worker-oriented vs. job-oriented (orientation) continuum was unidimensional. Previous research indicated that verbs from job descriptions could be scaled along the orientation continuum. The multidimensional method of successive intervals was applied to a sample of 20 previously scaled verbs. From the responses of 50 college Ss instructed to consider the verbs in terms of jobs, 5 orthogonal dimensions were obtained. It is concluded that the orientation continuum existed, but that it was too complex to be considered unidimensional. Research based on actual observed job behavior is needed to establish the generality of the orientation continuum and to determine if it is an adequate construct on which to base indirect validity.
