THERMAL BREAKDOWN CAUSED BY FIELD-ENHANCED CONDUCTION IN ALKALI HALIDES

A study is made of electrical breakdown in crystals of NaCl, KCl, NaCl+MnCl2 and KCl+SrCl2, resulting from the application of single voltage pulses with essentially constant amplitudes. It is found that at temperatures of about 200°C and higher the breakdown strength is time dependent: the time lags to breakdown decrease with increasing field strength. This is interpreted here in terms of the thermal breakdown mechanism, account being taken of an explicit field dependence of the electrical conductivity.
