COMPARISON OF LIGANDS OF DIFFERING DENTICITY AND BASICITY FOR THE INVIVO CHELATION OF ALUMINUM AND GALLIUM

Twenty-eight chelating ligands for aluminium, gallium and indium have been evaluated as binders of the M3+ ions in a simple human blood plasma model. Effective formation constants (at pH 7.4) and values of pM (-log[M3+]) were not found to be convenient tools for the comparison of all ligands under certain conditions. Speciation modelling allowed a direct comparison amongst ligands of the binding efficacy towards these metal ions under blood plasma conditions (50 μM transferrin sites, 0.1 M citrate, pH 7.4, 25°C). Applications of speciation computer modelling to animal studies are also discussed. © 1990.
