LINEAR SWEEP VOLTAMMETRY OF SILVER(I) CADMIUM(2) LEAD(2) COPPER(2) AND INDIUM(3) IN MOLTEN NANO3-KNO3 EUTECTIC

Linear sweep voltammetry of silver(I), cadmium(II), lead(II), copper(II), and indium(III) in molten sodium nitrate-potassium nitrate (50-50 mole %) was studied at platinum wire and indium pool [in the case of In(lll)] electrodes. Linear dependence of peak current on concentration obtained for the first four cations indicates that metal oxide formation is not appreciable at the experimental temperature of 245° C. The addition of anhydrous InCI3 to the solvent results in a yellow precipitate, possibly InOCI. The importance of the oxidation of reduction products by the nitrate solvent, blocking by the oxide film, and alloy formation is discussed, based on the observed variation of peak current with scan rate, and the calculated n values. © 1968, American Chemical Society.
