THERMAL MICROCLIMATE IN WINTER FARROWING NESTS OF FREE-RANGING DOMESTIC PIGS

Temperatures in 16 farrowing nests constructed by free-ranging domestic pigs during two winters were measured during the first week post-partum. The nests were mainly constructed with straw as the nest material. Measurements were made approximately 5 cm from the piglets. Nest temperatures were virtually unaffected by outer climatic conditions and by the number of animals in the nests. Nest temperatures varied between 11 and 26°C (average 20.3°C) and outdoor temperatures at the same times varied between -17°C and 7°C (average -1.5°C). We conclude that providing sows with farrowing units containing plenty of straw and allowing the sows to construct "nests" may help to provide the pigs with optimal microclimates. © 1990.
