PRODUCTION AND MAGIC NUMBERS OF LARGE HYDRATED ANION CLUSTERS X-(H2O)N=0-59 (X = OH, O, O2, AND O3) UNDER THERMAL CONDITIONS

Large X-(H2O)n=0-59 (X = OH, O, O2, and O3) negative cluster ions were, for the first time, produced and studied in a flow tube reactor under well-defined temperatures and pressures. Magic numbers at n = 11, 14, 17, and 20 for OH-(H2O)n and O-(H2O)n are observed which are consistent with expected structures involving stable closed six-member and five-member rings. Comparison is made of the observations of magic numbers of the hydrated OH- and H3O+ clusters, and some interesting analogies between the two kinds of clusters are indicated. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
