ON THE SMALL-SCALE STRIATION EFFECT IN IONOSPHERIC RADIO MODIFICATION EXPERIMENTS NEAR HARMONICS OF THE ELECTRON GYRO FREQUENCY

Some theoretical efforts to explain the development of small scale magnetic field-aligned plasma density striations and the accompanying wide band absorption observed in ionospheric radio modification experiments, involve upper hybrid waves trapped in plasma density depletions. In this paper it is pointed out that this wave trapping concept implies a prediction that the effect should be suppressed when the frequency of the HF transmitter is slightly below a harmonic of the electron gyro frequency. This is due to the existence of a second cutoff in the upper hybrid dispersion relation as derived from a kinetic description. Some quantitative predictions are obtained of how the suppression bands around gyro harmonic number nu, nu = 3,4,5,..., depend on nu and the unsuppressed striation amplitude. In these predictions, also the collisionless damping near gyro harmonics has been taken into account.
