Bulk melt-textured YBCO materials in the shape of disks are being developed for use as trapped field magnets and in superconducting magnetic bearings. We report on the superconducting properties relevant for these applications. The axial trapped field distribution on the top of the disk and its temperature dependence is measured and discussed in terms of a distribution of critical currents over the bulk of the sample. The time dependence of the trapped field distribution is investigated for different external conditions, such as in the homogeneous field of a vibrating sample magnetometer and the field of a rare earth magnet. The materials are tested in a model of a motor with superconducting levitating bearings. Different possibilities to further improve the performance of the motor by raising the critical current density j(C) and optimizing the overall configuration are discussed.
