RECURRENT BEHAVIORAL RECOVERY DURING SPREADING DEPRESSION

Measured 20 male hooded rats under spreading depression (SD) either on (1) licking for sucrose, (2) spontaneous activity in a wheel, or (3) Sidman avoidance in a wheel with electrifiable grids; all performed in repeated cycles of bursts of activity followed by inactivity rather than showing total inactivity. Durations from 1 burst to the next ranged 6-10 min., identical to the interval reported for the repetitive transcortical spread of the steady potential accompanying SD.
